Gathering of the People: Announcements

Call to Worship (Zephaniah)

Take a moment to center yourselves, to breath and to allow the Spirit to settle among you.
The Lord your God is with you, our God is mighty to save. God will take great delight in you, God will quiet you in love. Our God rejoices over us with singing. Come, let us worship our God.

Opening Prayer
Eternal Light, shine into our hearts; eternal Goodness, deliver us from evil; eternal Power, be our support. Eternal Wisdom, scatter the darkness of our ignorance; eternal Love, have mercy upon us, that with all our heart and mind and strength we may seek your face and be brought by your infinite mercy to your holy presence through Jesus Christ, AMEN

Invitation to Confession
The proof of God’s amazing love is this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Trusting in God’s faithfulness and compassion, let us confess our sins before God and one another.

Prayer of Confession
God of mercy, we confess before you that we are a people who have often forgotten all that you have done for us and all that you will do for us. We are frustrated by all that is happening around us, we become resigned and cynical, we withdraw and hide; but you come to us, you wrestle with us and with our world seeking to bring us into deeper relationship with you. We are worn and tired, hungry and in need of nourishment, we often think we must fulfill our own needs. But you set a table before us, invite us to sit and rest, providing all that we need. Help us in our need, wash away our sins, teach us to rely upon you, rest in you, to follow you more and more. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon
In the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, we are assured that there is no sin so terrible that God cannot forgive, no hurt so terrible that God cannot heal. God accepts, God forgives, and God sets us free. Receive the forgiving love of God and live in the wholeness and peace of Christ.

WE HEAR GOD’S WORD

Scripture Reading
Matthew 14:13-21
13 Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a deserted place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them and cured their sick. 15 When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is now late; send the crowds away so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” 16 Jesus said to them, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” 17 They replied, “We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish.” 18 And he said, “Bring them here to me.” 19 Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 20 And all ate and were filled; and they took up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full. 21 And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
